Inspiring Adventure, Building Skills and Creating Community in East Cornwall

East Cornwall Scout District is a thriving part of the UK Scout movement, serving the eastern part of Cornwall with a wide range of groups and activities for young people aged 4 to 25. The district was officially formed in 2009 following the merger of two long-established districts: Mount Edgcumbe and West Caradon.

A History of Scouting in East Cornwall

Mount Edgcumbe District had a proud heritage of Scouting along Cornwall’s south-east coastline, including towns and villages like Torpoint, Rame, and Saltash. With a strong maritime tradition and close-knit communities, Mount Edgcumbe was known for its dedication to outdoor adventure and community engagement.

West Caradon District covered the inland and moorland areas, including Liskeard, Looe, and the surrounding parishes. It had a long-standing reputation for hillwalking, camping, and traditional Scouting skills, supported by passionate volunteers and generations of local families.

Both districts shared a common commitment to helping young people gain confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility—key values that continue to define East Cornwall today.

A New Chapter

The decision to merge in 2009 was made to strengthen local Scouting, create a more sustainable structure, and better support volunteers and young people. By bringing together the knowledge, leadership, and resources of both districts, East Cornwall Scout District is now better placed to deliver high-quality, adventurous, and inclusive Scouting for years to come.

Today, the district includes a wide range of Scout Groups and Explorer Units, supported by a team of committed adult volunteers and a growing community of supporters. From beach clean-ups and night hikes to international trips and leadership training, East Cornwall Scouts continues to thrive—building on a rich history to inspire the next generation.

Whether you’re a young person ready for adventure or an adult looking to make a difference, there’s a place for you in East Cornwall Scouts.

So, what do Scouts do?

Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling and canoeing.

But, we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.

Every week we give almost half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life.

Everyone’s welcome here. All genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of your young person’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.
